Cylinder formulas explained

A cylinder has two parallel circular bases joined by a curved surface. Unrolled, the curved surface is a rectangle 2πr wide. Below are all the cylinder formulas with what each letter means, a worked example and a free calculator.

  • Volume: V = πr²h
  • Curved surface area: CSA = 2πrh
  • Total surface area: TSA = 2πr(r + h)

Worked example: volume of a cylinder

Given Radius r = 3 cm, Height h = 7 cm, substitute the values into each cylinder formula:

  • V = π × 3² × 7 = 197.92 cm³
  • CSA = 2 × π × 3 × 7 = 131.95 cm²
  • TSA = 2π × 3 × (3 + 7) = 188.5 cm²
