FAQ
Geometry formulas: common questions
What are geometry formulas?
Geometry formulas are equations that work out the measurements of a shape, such as its area, perimeter, volume or surface area, from lengths like a side, a radius or a height. For example, the area of a circle is A = πr².
What are the basic geometry formulas?
The geometry formulas used most often are: area of a square A = a², area of a rectangle A = l × w, area of a triangle A = ½ × b × h, area of a circle A = πr², circumference C = 2πr, volume of a cube V = a³, volume of a cylinder V = πr²h and the Pythagorean theorem a² + b² = c².
What is the difference between area and volume formulas?
Area formulas measure the flat space inside a 2D shape and give square units such as cm². Volume formulas measure the space inside a 3D solid and give cubic units such as cm³.
How do I use a geometry formula?
Pick the formula for your shape, replace each letter with your measurement, then calculate. For a circle with radius 5 cm: A = π × 5² = 78.54 cm². The calculator on each formula page shows these steps for you.
Can I download the geometry formulas as a PDF?
Yes. You can download a free complete geometry formulas PDF, a one-page geometry formulas cheat sheet, sheets for 2D shapes, 3D solids and theorems, and a worksheet for each shape with a worked example and practice questions.
What is π (pi) in geometry formulas?
π is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It is about 3.14159 and appears in every circle, sphere, cylinder and cone formula.
