Square Pyramid formulas explained

A square pyramid has a square base and four triangular faces meeting at the apex. Its volume is one third of the matching prism. Below are all the square pyramid formulas with what each letter means, a worked example and a free calculator.

  • Volume: V = (1 ⁄ 3) a²h
  • Slant height: s = √(h² + (a ⁄ 2)²)
  • Surface area: SA = a² + 2as

Worked example: volume of a square pyramid

Given Base edge a = 6 cm, Height h = 4 cm, substitute the values into each square pyramid formula:

  • V = (1 ⁄ 3) × 6² × 4 = 48 cm³
  • s = √(4² + (6 ⁄ 2)²) = 5 cm
  • SA = 6² + 2 × 6 × s = 96 cm²
