Rhombus formulas explained

A rhombus has four equal sides. Its diagonals cross at right angles, so its area is half the product of the diagonals. Below are all the rhombus formulas with what each letter means, a worked example and a free calculator.

  • Area: A = ½ × p × q
  • Side: s = ½ √(p² + q²)
  • Perimeter: P = 4s

Worked example: area of a rhombus

Given Diagonal p = 8 cm, Diagonal q = 6 cm, substitute the values into each rhombus formula:

  • A = ½ × 8 × 6 = 24 cm²
  • s = ½ √(8² + 6²) = 5 cm
  • P = 4 × s = 20 cm
